The snake is not carved onto the sword — it wraps around it, and the gaps are cut clean through. Three open windows separate the coils from the blade, with the narrowest bridge only a few millimetres of stone. Jadeite is brittle, and every one of those cuts is a chance to lose the piece. The scales are worked individually, the belly banded in sections, all of it in a stone 9.5mm thick with the coils passing in front of and behind the blade.
