Nephrite is the original Chinese jade. For most of Chinese history, "jade" meant this stone — the ritual discs of Liangzhu five thousand years ago, the burial suits of the Han dynasty, the tribute jade carried from Hetian along the Silk Road. Jadeite arrived from Burma only in the Qing dynasty, roughly two hundred and fifty years ago.

Everything here is natural, untreated Hetian nephrite from southern Xinjiang, carved and finished in our Kunming workshop, with its origin stated and a gemological certificate you can verify by serial number.

Why Choose a BMjade Jadeite Jewellery

1. The toughest gem material there is. Nephrite's structure is a dense mat of interlocking fibres rather than granular crystals, which gives it the highest toughness of any gemstone — higher even than jadeite. Ancient workshops made axe heads from it. In jewellery worn every day, that is not a technical footnote; it is the reason nephrite heirlooms survive generations.

2. Hetian nephrite from Xinjiang, named by source. Our material comes from the northern slopes of the Kunlun Mountains in southern Xinjiang — the classical source, prized by Chinese courts for millennia. Two kinds reach us: river-tumbled pebble material (籽料) from the Yurungkash and Karakash rivers, which the water has already graded by destroying everything fractured or porous, and mountain material (山料) worked higher in the range. A great deal of nephrite jewellery sold internationally is called "Hetian" regardless of where it was mined. We name the source.

3. Graded correctly — there is no "Type A" in nephrite. Type A, B and C classify jadeite treatments only, and any seller applying them to nephrite is guessing. Our material is described the way nephrite is actually graded: on texture (细腻度), lustre (油润度), colour evenness and purity. The treatments that do occur in nephrite are dyeing and wax coating, and we stock neither.

4. We judge texture and lustre before colour. In nephrite, the fineness of the grain and the warmth of the surface matter more than a bright shade. Top material shows no visible structure and looks as though it would feel soft to the touch. That judgement is not obvious from a photograph — so ask us, and we will tell you honestly where a piece sits.

5. A certificate with every piece — and money behind it. Every piece ships with a gemological certificate whose serial number you can check on the issuing laboratory's own website, before you order or years afterwards.

  • the mineral is not the one stated (a piece sold as jadeite is nephrite, or the reverse, or is neither);
  • a jadeite piece sold as Type A has in fact been bleached, resin-impregnated or dyed;
  • a nephrite piece sold as natural has in fact been dyed or wax-coated;

— then we will refund the full purchase price, reimburse your laboratory testing fee, and reimburse the cost of approved tracked return shipping.

Colours and Grades

Mutton-fat white sits at the top of Hetian white nephrite — a warm, dense, even white with the look of congealed fat and a lustre that seems to come from inside the stone. Genuine mutton-fat jade is rare, and a great deal of merely white material is sold under the name, which is why origin and certification matter here more than in almost any other gem material.

Below it: pure white nephrite jade; celadon (qing bai), the classical pale green-grey; spinach green, dense and dark, and the classic choice for men's pieces; yellow nephrite jade; and black nephrite jade for heavier modern designs. Blue-toned material is rarer still.

Nephrite also rewards being worn. Its slightly softer surface and fibrous structure mean that years of skin contact build a deeper, warmer lustre — the effect Chinese collectors call 盘玩, the slow polishing of a stone by the life it accompanies. It is why nephrite heirlooms often look better than new pieces.

Frequently asked questions

Is nephrite real jade?

Yes. "Jade" is an umbrella term covering exactly two minerals — nephrite and jadeite — and both are genuine jade. Nephrite is the older of the two in Chinese use by several thousand years.
Is nephrite Type A?

The question does not apply. Type A, B and C classify jadeite treatments only; nephrite has no equivalent system. Nephrite is correctly described as natural and untreated, and graded on texture, lustre, colour evenness and purity. A seller labelling nephrite "Type A" is not describing the material accurately.
What is mutton-fat jade?

The top grade of Hetian white nephrite: a warm, dense, even white with the look of congealed fat and a lustre that appears to come from within the stone. It is rare, frequently imitated in name, and the reason certification matters in this material.
Nephrite or jadeite — which should I choose?

Choose jadeite for translucency and vivid green, lavender or icy colour. Choose nephrite for a warm, waxy lustre, exceptional toughness, the deepest roots in Chinese jade tradition, and a stone that visibly improves with decades of wear. Does nephrite change with wear?

Yes, more visibly than jadeite. Years of skin contact build a deeper, warmer lustre — 盘玩 — which is traditionally read as improvement rather than damage.
How do I know the origin claim is accurate?

Laboratory reports confirm the material; origin is a trade judgement that depends on who is making it, which is why we tell you who selected the stone and where. If origin is critical to your purchase, email us before ordering and we will explain exactly what we know about that piece.
